Ik heb diverse programma's geprobeerd om muziek en films te streamen via Internet vanaf mijn eigen server. Het is me nooit echt goed gelukt. Zegt ook wel iets over mijn l33t skills :-)
Dankzij een link van LXer.com kwam ik op deze site.
Na een simpele install en configuratie van Gnump3d zit ik nu lekker in de tuin naar muziek te luisteren dat vanaf mijn server op zolder wordt verstuurd. Yes!

Dankzij een artikel op de internationale Ubuntu planet werd ik gewezen op een script om zelf Ubuntu DVD's te maken. Erg handig voor wanneer je eens zonder internet verbinding komt te zitten, bijvoorbeeld tijdens een Ubuntu Linux install party.
Het script maakt gebruik van Ruby en applicaties als debmirror, debpartial en mkisofs. Hier wordt op gechecked (met uitzondering van mkisofs, dus voeg dat zelf toe) en een waarschuwing gegeven voordat het script echt aan de gang gaat.
Zet dit script aan het werk op een schijf met minstens 30 Gb want hij slurpt een complete mirror naar binnen. Start het ook in een screen sessie zodat je na start rustig wat anders kunt gaan doen.
Wanneer je up-to-date wilt blijven met de laatste packages is het gewoon en kwestie van het script nog een keer draaien en het upgrade zichzelf.
Kijk in het script voor de configuratie mogelijkheden. Zoek je iets vergelijkbaars, maar dan met een GUI kijk dan naar APTOnCD. Zie hier voor meer info.
In tegenstelling tot vorige release van Ubuntu heb ik dit keer mijn testsysteem eerst volledig ge-upgrade naar Edgy en vervolgens de stap genomen om in mijn /etc/apt/sources.list edgy te vervangen door feisty. Vervolgens via de bekende mantra
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
de testomgeving naar Feisty opgewerkt.
Alles ging vrij soepel. Alleen een set fonts weigerden uitgepakt te worden met de foutmelding Failed to write to cache. Na 50 van dit soort meldingen stopte DPKG er ook mee. Met sudo apt-get install gaat het installeren weer verder.
Uiteindelijk heb ik een nieuw bijgewerkt systeem en kan alles herstart worden. Vingers gekruist gehouden reboot ik.
Alles werkt. Zo gauw zie ik geen verschillen met Edgy. Alleen een aantal versie nummers zijn hoger. Vervolgens installeer ik XGL en Beryl. Na een klein issue met de xorg config file werkt dat ook. Ik gebruik de Edgy repository van beerorkid. Werkt prima onder Feisty. Alleen een film afspelen met Totem levert een aantal problemen op, zoals geen beeld:).
Wat iedereen met een beetje verstand al zag aankomen gaat dus nu ook werkelijk gebeuren. Soms vraag ik me wel eens af of de mensen die dit soort constructies uitdenken en ondertekenen wel enige relatie met de werkelijkheid hebben.
Gezien de populariteit de laatste tijd van geheime side-letters, vraag ik me af of die ook bij de Novell / Microsoft overeenkomst bestaan en wat dat voor gevolgen zal hebben voor de rest van deze zich ontwikkelende soap opera.

Ik kom vanavond binnen en daar staat een leuk doosje met Ubuntu CD's. Yes! Ik heb een aardig voorraadje besteld. 50 Ubuntu 6.06 LTS voor de PC, 10 Ubuntu 6.06 LTS voor de 64 bit machines en 10 Ubuntu 6.06 LTS CD's voor de Mac.
